About the festival
‘‘LIVE in Barnsley’ is a FREE Metropolitan Music Festival which is spread over a number of venues in a fairly compact area of Barnsley town centre and now draws over 4,000 music lovers each summer to the town. The festival was the brainchild of Dave Pearsall and Steve Clifford over a late night pint in a local music venue back in December 2012. It takes place in June each year.
The aim of the festival is to showcase the diverse musical talents our town and the surrounding northern region has to offer. We really like the idea that people can wander in and out of venues to watch bands they know and sometimes experience the music of bands they have never heard of but then become a fan. This strategy has worked well at similar metropolitan music festivals such as ‘Sheffield Tramlines’ and ‘Live at Leeds,’ we make no bones about it; they are the main influence behind LIB.
Getting around town and reaching all of the venues quickly is a doddle. They are all within easy walking distance of each other; the majority of them are clustered around the Town Hall, Market Hill and Peel Square area, with others only a short walking distance away.
We are a FREE festival, and will remain a FREE festival. ‘LIVE in Barnsley’ is organised by music loving volunteers, the bands all give their services for free. Much of the sound and lighting is provided at vastly discounted rates. The festival is funded solely by the venues, sponsors, advertisers and from the sale of festival T-shirts and programmes.
There will be a central merchandising area where bands can sell their CD’s, t-shirts etc. OR they can sell their merchandise in the venue where they are playing. ALL the money from these sales will belong to the band selling the merchandise. LIB makes no charge and takes no cut of sales. 100% all band sales goes to the bands.
From its inception, the festival has been a combination of special moments and performances with a spirit of originality. Every act and music fan has got much more to take home with them than just a T-shirt, from the amazing rooftop performance by The Doonicans, Feargal Sharkey and local MP Michael Dugher dueting on ‘Teenage Kicks’, young rock sensations, Allusondrugs exploding onstage, loads of local musicians performing as We Are The Bands to over 800 bouncing music lovers.
